Symptoms:

·         Feeling sad, possibly depressed

·         Withdraw from peers

·         Refusal to participate in activities

·         Engage in behaviors designed to seek attention

·         Insomnia

·         Physical ailments such as stomachache, sore throat, headache, nausea

 
How to deal with homesickness throughout your freshman year

 


  1. Acknowledge that you are homesick or lonely and know that it's natural

 

  1. Allot yourself a number of phone minutes each week for homesick moments

 

  1. Talk about your feelings with someone, maybe even a Resident Assistant or Advisor

 

  1. Bring pictures or other familiar items that remind you of family
    and friends and provide a sense of continuity to a
    new environment. 

 

  1. If you feel like crying, do so – releasing your
    feelings is natural and healthy

 

  1. Decorate your room.  It will feel more homey.

 

  1. Don't mask your feelings with food, TV, or denial

 

  1. Invite others to explore your new world;
    you might make a good friend in the process

 

  1. Exercise, visit a recreation center
