Welcome to Northwest Online's Photo Editor Tutorial. This page will help explain a few tips and tricks when working with Photo Editor. The program itself is very simple and user friendly, and this tutorial will aid in getting you, the user, aquainted with the menus and toolbars. These simple tools will help with image editing and downsizing. Topics below will cover Resizing, Cropping, Color Conversion, Web Ready, and Saving.
Resizing: |
|
As you can see in the screenshot above, the picture we are working with is too large; in order to create a usable picture, we must shrink it down.
Once your photo is open, go the the menu bar, click on Image, then click on Resize. You should get a new menu that looks something like this:
In order to make our image half its original size, we just need to change the percentage to 50%. Once we change one percentage, Photo Editor will automatically change the corresponding percentage as well. Once we have set the desired interval, simply click OK to apply the size change.
We now see that our picture is a good size to work with. Sizing down your pictures will also help with filesize, which is a major problem when working with large quantities of images. |
Cropping: |
|
Now we want to crop the picture in order to remove some of the unnecessary elements in the photo.
First choose the Select Tool from the toolbar (the dotted box). Once it is chosen, select the area you want to keep in the photo. (Like below)
While the selection is still made, move your pointer to the Menu Bar, click Image, then click Crop. You should receive a menu window that looks like this:
As long as part of the image is still correctly selected, click the OK button to crop the image. You do not need to make any additional changes in the crop menu, unless you want to.
Now the image has been resized and cropped. |
Color Conversion (to Grayscale): |
|
Converting an image to grayscale (black and white) is easy. Just right-click on the image and select Properties. The Properties dialogue box then appears.
To change from color to grayscale, select the Type scroll menu and find Gray Scale. Make sure this is selected, then click OK.
The image is now Black and White. |
Web Ready : |
| Pictures to be printed need to have the resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch). For pictures on the web, the resolution needs to be set at 72 dpi. Make this change for pictures that will be posted on the Internet, including pictures in PowerPoint presentations on the Internet. This will make the file size of the picture much smaller and allow much faster download to view. This is how to change the resolution of a picture. Go to the File Menu and click Properties. In the Properties window set the resolution to 72 pixels/inch
|
Saving: |
|
Saving in Photo Editor is about the same as many other Windows programs. Go to File, then click Save As. In the Save As window, select the location that you wish to save the file. Then give the file a name and set the file extension. It is important to remember to save as a .gif if the image is line art or text. If the image is a picture, the best file format to save it in is .jpg. More options for saving the images are located when you click the More button in the lower left corner. These options include .jpg quality, and compression. |
